There are also some requests it does (like time sync and connectivity checks) that are listed on the website, and I don't think there was evidence of anything extra. Still, that doesn't send out the personal data telemetry so that's what I was after.

Could you link the thread? I'd be curious to see it. I understand there is something with F-droid where there is no automatic key verification or something like that and there is more trust placed in the devs. Despite that I've heard there is actually less malware in the F-droid app than the Google Play Store app
